sources, following a stealthy expedition by the Nation's Security Intelligence
Agency, Canberra is prepared to rescue scores of Australian women and children
of Islamic State fighters from refugee camps in Syria, as per reports.
Reports say that 16
women and 42 children of Islamic State combatants who have been detained in
camps for three and a half years and who are either dead or imprisoned
would be returned were not immediately confirmed by the authorities.
According to a
spokesperson for Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil, "The Australian
Government's overriding priority is the protection of Australians and
Australia's national interests, informed by national security adviser."
"It would not be
acceptable to comment further given the sensitive nature of the subjects
involved," the statement reads.
When her opposition
colleague urged the government to reassure Australians that anyone who may have
been radicalized did not constitute a threat upon returning to Australia,
O'Neil did not respond right away.
According to Environment
Minister Tanya Plibersek, there are about 40 Australian children living in a
camp in Syria, and some of their mothers were deceived into marrying off their
children to members of the Islamic State when they were still very young.
