Digital Desk: The 11th of October is designated as "International Day of the Girl Child", with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of girls in our society. The 'International Day of the Girl Child' demands for people to become the voice of change for oppressed girls around and empower them. Girls face deeply rooted gender biases that have created problems. This raises the challenges of survival for girls around the world.

United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170, declaring October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world on December 19, 2011.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the first International Day of the Girl Child. The UN says this year there will be increased attention on issues that matter to girls in all spheres involving governments, policymakers, and the general public. The UN will also focus on generating more opportunities for them to have their voices heard at the global level. "Our time is now—our rights, our future" is this year’s theme for the "International Day of the Girl Child". The focus is on the multitude of challenges put in front of girls’ paths to reach their potential.

The "International Day of the Girl Child" is celebrated to raise awareness about such issues and work towards an action-oriented arrangement to uplift young girls. Empowered girls are believed to be the future of a great and progressive society.
