Israel's foreign ministry spokesperson, Oren Marmorstein, stated that ambassadors from several countries would be summoned
Digital Desk: Israel has announced plans to summon ambassadors from countries that supported a resolution recommending full Palestinian membership in the UN Security Council. The move comes in response to Thursday's vote, where 12 countries backed the resolution while two abstained. Only the United States, Israel's ally, voted against it, using its veto power to block the resolution.
In protest, Israel's foreign ministry spokesperson, Oren Marmorstein, stated that ambassadors from several countries would be summoned for a "protest talk." The ambassadors from France, Japan, South Korea, Malta, the Slovak Republic, and Ecuador are among those who will be summoned first. Additional countries are also expected to receive similar protests.
Marmorstein emphasised that the gesture of upgrading Palestinian status in the UN, particularly following recent events, including what Israel refers to as the "October 7 massacre," is seen as rewarding terrorism. The draft resolution aimed to recommend admitting the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations, replacing its current status as a "non-member observer state" since 2012.
Israel's action underscores its strong opposition to moves perceived as legitimising Palestinian statehood without what it considers meaningful progress towards peace and stability in the region.
