Digital Desk: Flipkart has apologized for a marketing gaffe that saw the e-commerce giant promoting kitchen appliances on International Women’s Day. To mark the special day, Flipkart sends a message that many social media users consider it misogynistic.

“Dear Customer, This Women’s Day, let’s celebrate You. Get Kitchen Appliances from ₹ 299 [sic],” read the message.

Many social media users believed that the ad perpetuated negative assumptions about women’s place in the kitchen.

Flipkart may not have seen the issue while promoting kitchen equipment on Women’s Day, but Twitter users did, and they chastised the firm for it.

One Twitter user sharing a screenshot of the message sent by Flipkart wrote, “Can you spot the problem here?”

Soon after it was shared, the Tweet gathered more than 5,000 likes and hundreds of comments.

The advertisement generated backlash on social media, with many criticizing Flipkart’s marketing strategy for linking women with cooking and kitchens.

Several Twitter users also chastised Flipkart for maintaining gender norms.

Later, Flipkart apologized on Twitter as the anger over the Women’s Day statement increased.

“We messed up and we are sorry; we did not intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments and apologies for the Women’s Day message shared earlier,” it wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Flipkart was just one of several firms whose Women’s Day message fell flat. Twitter users also posted several more examples, all of which promoted unfavorable gender stereotypes.
