Dhan stands for wealth, and Teras stands for 13. Also known as Dhanatrayodashi, this day marks the beginning of Diwali. Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi should be done during PradoshKaal,l which starts after sunset and approximately lasts 2 hours and 24 minutes.
As per belief, fourteen ratnas(jewels) emerged from the ocean bed as the devas and asuras churned the Krishna Sagar during Amrit Mantham. During the process, halala (poison) also emerged. Lord Dhanavantri, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, emerged with a Kalash filled with the divine nectar of immortality(Amrit). Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and the consort of Lord Vishnu, also emerged from the ocean bed.
