Digital Desk: Happiness mantras, happiness gurus, happiness classes and courses- nowadays happiness seems to be eluding us more than ever, even as we go all out in its quest.
The expression of happiness in the form of a content smile, or raucous laughter, beaming face and jolly gestures is all too aspirational.
But there is also the happiness that is deep-seated in the core of the heart, that is perhaps more satisfying, and more enduring.
This deep sense of happiness is intrinsic, associated with a blurring of boundaries and barriers. It is a feeling of oneness with others and all of the created universe. A sense of belongingness and purpose.
One can arrive at it through de-escalating the ego. The ego keeps us separate, alienated. It is what makes us disjointed from the organic oneness of creation.
With the diminishing of focus on ‘I, Me, Myself’, it is only natural to get engaged in the serviceof others.
Service opens the floodgates of authentic happiness.
We find ourselves surrounded with gratitude, love, care, which are the best feelings one can experience in this world.
We also build self-esteem through acts of service. Irrespective of who or what circumstances tried to pull us down in life, our self-esteem can be immediately replenished through acts of service. From there it is but a short journey to earning esteem in the eyes of the world, and even of posterity.
So, instead of chasing happiness, simply ask yourself today: Am I engaging in acts of service?
The slightest act of service is good to begin with.
Patiently listening to someone in pain, helping someone with a chore, offering a small refreshment- every bit counts.
Serve- and watch your life swerve- into the fast track to true happiness!
