At the James Beard Foundation Awards in Chicago, the Asheville eatery won "America's Most Outstanding Restaurant."

Digital Desk: "Street vendors all over India serve brightly flavoured tasty treats and snacks. Chai Pani, which serves affordable Indian street food in North Carolina, has been named the best restaurant in America for the flavour explosion that a bite-sized piece of food offers at a low price. "It cost only $8.49."

At the James Beard Foundation Awards in Chicago on Monday, the Asheville eatery was named "America's Most Outstanding Restaurant," beating out nominees like Brennan's in New Orleans.

Although Chai Pani first opened its doors in downtown Asheville in 2009, it has since grown to eight locations across Atlanta and Charlotte in just over a decade. Spicewalla, its sister company, is famous in home kitchens and among restaurant chefs in the United States.

Have you ever wondered why, as a global Indian brand, what idea has worked for Chai Pani?

It has elevated chaat as a worthy snack and catapulted a massy obsession to a classy statement, beating cult favourites in a country that is the capital of "food on the go." Its diversity has won many multicultural cuisines, ensuring Indian dominance in that space.

Furthermore, in a world dominated by vegetarianism and veganism, Chai Pani has emerged as the ideal reason for the conversion, where sustainable eating is no longer merely a bland compromise but a sinful indulgence.

The chaat is merely a gateway. "Some of the best food of any country is its street food," says Chai Pani's homepage, "and Chai Pani features chaat — crunchy, spicy, sweet, tangy, brightly flavorful Indian street snacks." Because there's nothing more comforting and delicious than a home-cooked meal in any culture, Chai Pani also offers thalis or traditional family meals highlighting India's incredible culinary diversity." That's why it's been named one of the New York Times' top 50 restaurants.

Bhelpuri, Sev Dahi Puri, Corn Bhel, Green Mango Chaat, Potato Chaat, Aloo Tikki, Kale Pakoras, and, of course, given the acceptance of crepes in the United States, the uttapam are among its best-selling items. This one has been dubbed the chef's signature dish, as it is tossed with salt and seasoning and served with a lime wedge. They've even elevated our beloved desi salad by dressing it with a cumin-lime vinaigrette. Also available are Julienned Okra Fries.

There are non-vegetarian hits, but they all follow the same pattern. Chicken Pakoras with Kashmiri spices, Keema Pav, Lamb Burgers, Chicken Tikka Rolls, and curry bowls are among the choices.

Its "fresh, cilantro-strewn takes on Indian street food" caught the attention of the New York Times, while GQ Magazine praised its "Indian street food with a twang." After being cancelled in 2020 and 2021, the honours were awarded after two years.
