4 Gujarat students with top scores in Proficiency Test fail to speak English before US Court, probe on

The police said that the six young men appeared for exam in south Gujarat's Navsari town on September 25, 2021, and went to Canada on student visa on March 19 this year, nearly two weeks before they were caught at the US-Canada border.

Digital Desk: Following six residents of Gujarat who failed to communicate in English in front of a US court despite having good English proficiency test IELTS scores, the police in Gujarat opened an inquiry. In March of this year, the men were discovered trying to enter the US from Canada by watercraft. The internet is also perplexed after hearing of these people's arrests. According to the news agency PTI, the investigation was started at the request of American authorities.

The six individuals, who were all between the ages of 19 and 21, were reportedly apprehended from a sinking boat in the Saint Regis river in Akwesasne, New York, not far from the Canadian border, according to Inspector Bhavesh Rathod of the Mehsana police's Special Operations Group (SOG), who was quoted by PTI.

"They refused to respond to the judge's queries in English when they were brought before a court in the US. The court needed a Hindi translator's assistance. The court was perplexed because these kids had IELTS scores of between 6.5 and 7, "explained Inspector Rathod.

A solid score on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required for admission to reputable universities in many different nations for non-native speakers of the language.

Users of social media expressed shock at the news.

A user tweeted that Jugaad culture is becoming more widespread. Another person added, "Faking IELTS will definitely land them in New Jersey, but once detected, it impacts all Indian students attempting to establish a profession."

The six young men, according to the authorities, took an exam in the town of Navsari in south Gujarat on September 25, 2021, and travelled to Canada on a student visa on March 19 of this year—nearly two weeks before they were apprehended at the US-Canada border.

All of the CCTV cameras at the banquet hall where the exam was held were turned off, Inspector Rathor said.

According to PTI, the proprietors of the organisation that had permission to administer the exam have been asked to appear before the police as part of the investigation.
