82% women in India can refuse sex to their husbands: Reports
However, the statistics suggest that 82% of Indian women can decline to have sex with their husbands.

Digital Desk: With fewer than a third (32 percent) of married women working and 44% of women not even being allowed to go to the market alone, the National Family Health Survey 5 (NFHS-5) findings do not exactly mention women empowerment.

However, the statistics suggest that 82% of Indian women can decline to have sex with their husbands.

“More than four in five women (82 percent) can say no to their husband if they do not want to have sexual intercourse. Women are most likely to be able to say no in Goa (92 percent) and least likely to be able to say no in Arunachal Pradesh (63 percent) and Jammu & Kashmir (65 percent),” the NFHS-5 report stated, issued last week by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

This is a new statistic established in the most recent survey, which was done in two phases: Phase I from 17 June 2019 to 30 January 2020, which covered 17 states and 5 UTs, and Phase II from 2 January 2020 to 30 April 2021, which covered 11 states and 3 UTs.

Marital rape is an exception to the Indian Penal Code’s (IPC) definition of rape, which means that a man forcing himself on his wife beyond the age of 18 cannot be punished. However, the findings suggest that both partners in a marriage gradually adjust their attitudes.

During the assessment, men were asked some additional questions to evaluate gender views. These were about a woman who refused to have sex with her husband when he requested it. Men were asked if they believe they have the right to be furious and chastise her, refuse to give her money or other forms of financial support, use force and have sex with her even if she doesn’t want it, and have sex with another woman.

The survey reveals that “…only 6 percent of men age 15-49 agree that men have the right to display all four of these behaviours if a wife refuses him sex, and 72 percent do not agree with any of the four behaviours. However, 19 percent of men agree that a husband has the right to get angry and reprimand a woman if she refuses to have sex with her husband.”

“In almost all states, the percentage of men who agree with none of the four behaviours is above 70 percent, and the percentage of men who agree with none of the four behaviours is less than 50 percent only in Punjab (21 percent), Chandigarh (28 percent), Karnataka (45 percent), and Ladakh (46 percent). The percentage of men who agree with none of the four behaviours had decreased by 5 percentage points since NFHS-4 when it was 77 percent,” it adds.
