They were also fined Rs 1,500 each by the court. The ruling was issued by the MP-MLA court in connection with the lawsuit that was filed on June 19, 2001.

People had blocked the road and organised a major protest against the then-BJP administration in Uttar Pradesh, led by Rajnath Singh, according to police. The protest was in response to frequent power outages and inadequate water supplies in Sultanpur.
According to government attorney Vaibhav Pandey, the police have filed a case against Sanjay Singh, Anoop Sanda, and followers Vijay Kumar, Kamal Srivastava, Santosh Kumar, and Subhash for blocking the road and demonstrating. They were charged under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly) and 341 (wrongful restraint).
Singh, who was present in court during the verdict, criticised the then-BJP administration for mishandling the otherwise peaceful demonstration.
