All-woman bench in Supreme Court today, Third time in history
Before her appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Kohli served as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. Prior to being promoted to the SC, Justice Trivedi served as a Gujarat High Court judge.

Digital Desk: The Supreme Court on Thursday will have an all-woman bench, maybe for the third time in its history.

Justices Hima Kohli and Bela M Trivedi were appointed to the bench by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court's first all-women bench was made up of Justices Gyan Sudha Misra and Ranjana Prakash Desai in 2013.

The second time was in 2018, on September 5, when Justices R. Banumathi and Indira Banerjee shared a bench.

At least 32 cases have been set for the Justices Kohli and Trivedi bench, beginning with 10 transfer petitions concerning marriage conflicts and continuing with 10 bail cases.

Justices Kohli, B V Nagarathna, and Trivedi are the only three female judges in the Supreme Court at the moment. Justice Trivedi will serve in that position until June 2025, while Justice Kohli has a tenure that runs till September 2024. In 2027, Justice Nagarathna will become the first female chief justice in the nation.

In contrast to its sanctioned strength of 34 judges, the Supreme Court now has a working strength of 27 judges. Due to Justice S. Abdul Nazeer's impending retirement on January 4, 2023, there will be eight open positions as of next month. Along with Justice Nazeer, seven additional judges will have their terms as judges expire in 2019.

When Justice M. Fatima Beevi was elevated to the Supreme Court in 1989 following her retirement as a Kerala High Court judge, the court had its first female judge. Sujatha Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Misra, Ranjana Prakash Desai, R. Banumathi, Indu Malhotra, Indira Banerjee, Kohli, Nagarathna, and Trivedi were the judges who came after her. The final three, including Justice Banerjee, were sworn in on the same day, September 2, 2021, under the leadership of the then-Chief Justice of India, N V Ramana. This brought the total number of women sitting as judges to a historic four.

On September 23 of this year, Justice Banerjee retired.

Before her appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Kohli served as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. Prior to being promoted to the SC, Justice Trivedi served as a Gujarat High Court judge.
