Thane: In yet another shocker, a 15-year-old girl was reportedly raped and assaulted with a hammer by a man. The incident took place near Ulhasnagar town railway station in Maharashtra’s Thane district, said police on Sunday. This incident happened just after the 34-year-old woman died after she was raped and brutalized with an iron rod in Mumbai’s Sakinaka area.
A railway police official said that the incident took place on Friday night, and the accused, identified as Shrikant Gaikwad (30), a laborer, was arrested a day later.
“The girl was walking on a skywalk at the Ulhasnagar railway station on her way home from Shirdi, along with her two friends, when Gaikwad suddenly came there and forcibly removed her scarf. Later, he attacked her on her head with a hammer. He also threatened that he would harm her friends if they came to her rescue,” he said.
The accused then forcibly took the minor to a shanty near the railway station and brutally raped her. When the victim tried to run away from the spot, he caught hold of her and beat her up. The girl escaped on Saturday morning when the accused was not present there. After escaping, she somehow managed to reach her residence, said the police official.
Later, her family members complained about the incident, to the Kalyan railway police station, the official said.
A special team was formed to arrest the accused, and based on a tip-off, Gaikwad was arrested from the Shri Ram Chowk area in Ulhasnagar on Saturday night. He was booked on charges of kidnapping, rape, and also under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
DCP of GRP said that the accused was produced before a local court, which remanded him in police custody till Tuesday.
According to police, the victim had injuries on her head. She is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ulhasnagar.
