    Digital Desk:  The appointment of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and SV Bhatti to the Supreme Court was approved by the Central government on Wednesday.


    Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Law and Justice, tweeted the news.


    The tweet of Arjun Ram Meghwal states, "In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the Hon'ble President, after consultation with the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint the following 02 Chief Justices of High Courts as Judges of the Supreme Court of India - Justice Ujjal Bhuyan; Justice SV Bhatti."


    On July 5, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended their appointment to the highest court.


    Justice Bhuyan is the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, while Justice Bhatti is the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.


    On October 17, 2011, Justice Bhuyan was appointed to the Gauhati High Court. He is the most senior judge on his parent High Court and has been Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court since June 28, 2022.


    Justice Bhatti was appointed to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on April 12, 2013, and is the senior-most judge in his parent High Court.


    In March 2019, he was transferred to the Kerala High Court, where he has been serving as Chief Justice since June 1, 2023.


    According to the Collegium decision, the Andhra Pradesh High Court has not appeared in the Supreme Court since August 2022.


    The Supreme Court is now operating with 30 judges instead of the sanctioned 34.


    The apex court's strength will increase to 32 with the addition of two more judges.
