‘Arrogant king crushing voice of public on streets’: Opposition leaders on police detaining wrestlers
Political leaders across the board have denounced the Delhi police's move, accusing the BJP government of unfairness and suppressing democratic values.

Digital Desk: A women's Mahapanchayat was scheduled for the day of the unveiling ceremony, where protesting wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia were detained by the Delhi Police. This occurred as images of the opening of the new Parliament in the nation's capital flashed across television and social media from just 2 km away.

Videos of a fight between demonstrators and police officers on Sunday morning at Jantar Mantar showed anarchy breaking out.

Leading Indian wrestlers have been protesting since April 2023 at the government's lack of response to allegations of sexual harassment against WFI chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.

Political leaders across the board have denounced the Delhi police's move, accusing the BJP government of unfairness and suppressing democratic values.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, criticised the police's actions. He tweeted, “Such behaviour with our sportspersons who take India’s name to greater height is very wrong and condemnable,” he tweeted.

The PM is now silencing the voice of the people on the streets, according to Congressman Rahul Gandhi, who earlier accused the PM of treating the new parliament's inauguration like a "coronation ceremony."

Congress national secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attacked the BJP administration, claiming that "the BJP government's arrogance has increased so much that the government is mercilessly trampling the voices of our women players under their boots."

She remarked that the players' medals on their chests represented the pride of their nation.

“The Modi government might have inaugurated a new parliament building today. But on the streets, its police showed what it thinks of democracy,” wrote the official Twitter handle of CPI(M).

Mamata Banerjee, leader of the Trinamool Congress and chief minister of West Bengal, also denounced the Delhi Police's actions against the wrestlers, saying that "it is shameful that our champions are treated in this manner."

“Democracy lies in tolerance but autocratic forces thrive on intolerance and quelling of dissent. I demand they be immediately released by police,” she wrote on Twitter.
