The head of the Congress also said that the government is denying the opposition's demand for a debate on Manipur in both houses of Parliament.
Digital Desk: In a meeting with
President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday, leaders of the opposition INDIA group demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement about Manipur in Parliament and explain the steps necessary to bring about peace in the violent hit state.
Additionally, they urged that the prime minister travel to the region of conflict to appeal to the opposing factions for peace and reconciliation.
Moreover, 31 opposition leaders said that the Central government was unconcerned with the incidents occurring "barely 100 km from the Prime Minister's Office" in Nuh, Haryana, in a memorandum that was submitted to the President.
After meeting with the President, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge spoke to the media and stated that the MPs who were part of the group who had recently visited Manipur also informed the President about the situation in the state and what they had observed in the affected areas.
Kharge and other opposition figures informed reporters outside Rashtrapati Bhawan that the President was briefed on the developments in Manipur by the alliance's 31 members.
"We also submitted a memorandum to the President and how incidents of violence were continuing, especially atrocities against women and parading them naked," he said, adding that over 5,000 houses have been burned down, over 200 people have died, over 500 have been injured, and 60,000 people have been displaced as a result of the violence in Manipur so far.
He claimed that the rehabilitation centres, where the afflicted people were staying, lacked adequate housing and medical amenities.
"We held a meeting with the President to bring up the Manipur problem...Whether it was violence in Manipur or Haryana, we briefed the President about it all," Kharge added.
"The main demand is that the prime minister should speak and visit Manipur and list out steps needed to bring peace to Manipur and provide relief to the people of the state," he stated.
"We implore you to press upon the prime minister to urgently address Parliament on the prevailing situation in Manipur, followed by a detailed and comprehensive discussion on the matter," the opposition bloc said in the memorandum.
"We urgently request your kind intervention to establish peace and harmony in the state without any further delay.
Accountability for the devastation of the past 92 days must be determined. Both the Union government and the state government must fulfill their duty to provide justice to the affected communities," the memorandum also stated.
It said that her assistance and involvement are crucial for easing the suffering of the people of Manipur.
Later, Kharge said that the President had promised to consider their demands and memorandum.
Tiruchi Siva, Kanimozhi, Rajiv Ranjan 'Lallan' Singh, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Gaurav Gogoi, Sushil Kumar Gupta, Sushmita Dev, Jayant Singh, and Manoj Jha were a few of the politicians who went with the Congress chief.
According to Kharge, the prime minister has not been appearing before the House or making any statements regarding the actions he plans to take to restore peace and normalcy to the state.
The head of the Congress also said that the government is denying the opposition's demand for a debate on Manipur in both houses of Parliament.
"Seconds after I am given permission to speak in the
Rajya Sabha, my mike is turned off, and the treasury benches start making noise. This is an insult to the leader of the opposition," he added, adding that this is taking place despite the Chairman's assertion that he sees the Leader of the House and that of the opposition equally.
In order to address the "grievous harm" done to state women, Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev further requested that the president appoint two Manipuri women from different communities to the Rajya Sabha.
When a delegation from the opposition group met with the president, she suggested it.
