Bizzare Rules set by Kolkata College; Students asked to sign 'No torn jeans allowed' in affidavit
A college in Kolkata has required its undergraduate students to sign a pledge that they will not wear inappropriate clothing...

Digital Desk: Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College in the Indian state of West Bengal recently mandated undergraduate students to sign an undertaking promising (Affidavit) not to wear impaired or purposely torn jeans to the university. Similarly, the student's parents or guardians have been asked to sign a similar document.

"Having been admitted to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, I will never enter inside college premises wearing torn/artificially torn jeans or any kind of indecent dresses," the students must sign. I hereby affirm that I will wear normal civil apparel throughout my study period within the entire college premises."

The prohibition on students and faculty wearing inappropriate clothing, such as ripped jeans, is not new. "No student or staff may enter inside college premises wearing torn or artificially torn jeans," according to a warning issued last year. It is completely forbidden on college campuses."

"Last year, we issued a similar advisory for our students, "AJC Bose College's principal told Indian Express. Despite this, some students were seen arriving at college in tattered jeans. We don't want our students to come to campus dressed like this." The college's president further stated that "any student spotted wearing inappropriate clothing will be denied admission."

Following this notice, students at the colleges protested against the authorities, declaring that they would not abide by the rules.

Because students did not follow the previously issued advice, the college is seeking to make a major impression this year, which is why new students will be required to sign the undertaking to get admission.

Outside of the college foundations, students are free to wear anything they like, but they must adhere to the restrictions when inside. The principal further stated that the project would impose severe discipline on the campus.

The decision has evoked a wide range of reactions. "The college teaches us about freedom of expression but takes steps that limit personal choice. Students are responsible enough to judge what to wear and what not to wear at an institute if education is adequately given." said a third-year college student distraught by the step taken.
