Digital Desk: Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu was released from Patiala Central Jail on Saturday after being imprisoned for about ten months. Outside the jail, Congress fans assembled to greet the 59-year-old former cricketer. Dhols were also played outside the jail.
Notably, Sidhu was released nearly two months before the end of a one-year sentence in a road rage case. Several posters and hoardings of the Punjab Congress chief were also placed throughout the city of Patiala.
After being released from prison, Sidhu took aim at the BJP-led government. "There is no such thing as democracy right now. There is a plot to impose President's Rule in Punjab. Minorities are being attacked. You will weaken if you attempt to weaken Punjab," the Congress leader said.
Sidhu praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. "Whenever a dictatorship has come to this country, a revolution has also arrived, and this time, that revolution is led by Rahul Gandhi. He'll alarm the government," he said.
Notably, Sidhu's release was allegedly delayed due to the presence of media and crowds. The Congress leader's son, Karan Sidhu, previously stated in response to reports, "I am thinking that they are delaying his release due to the presence of media and crowds here. I have been told by jail officials that he will be released today. He was supposed to be freed at noon, but it's already past that time."
Sidhu was imprisoned on May 20, last year, after the Supreme Court condemned him to a year of rigorous imprisonment in the 1988 road rage case. Notably, the matter is connected to 65-year-old Gurnam Singh's death.
