Congress questioned how someone's surname could be a source of concern for Assam when it is facing serious problems and asked him to focus on resolving those first.
Digital Desk: The Assam chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has come under criticism from the Congress for questioning the legitimacy of the late former prime minister Indira Gandhi and her family members using the surname "Gandhi."
While Sarma referred to the Gandhi family as the "sardar (leader) of duplicates," Congress questioned how someone's surname could be a source of concern for Assam when it is facing serious problems and asked him to focus on resolving those first.
Sarma stated in her speech to the Mahila Morcha's final day of the two-day national executive of the BJP, "I have informed them (Gandhis) that you are the Sardar of duplicates. They took the surname after (Mahatma) Gandhi ji gave us independence. and they grabbed the surname. All are duplicate Gandhis.”
"I searched for how Indira, Rahul, Rajiv, and Priyanka became Gandhi for a very long time, but I couldn't locate it. Their surname was used in the first scam in India," Sarma said.
The Assam CM said, If a dacoit were to use the Gandhi surname, it would not make him a sage. “My humble request to Rahul Gandhi ji, please leave your duplicate surname as it is not original,” Sarma, who resigned from the Congress in 2015 to join the BJP, added.
In answer back, Apurba Bhattacharyya of the Congress stated, "Such comments are unsuited for a chief minister. He has no right to judge whether Rahul Ji is deserving of the Gandhi surname or not. Is there any way that it relates to the state's issues? How can a person's surname cause an issue for the state?
The state is dealing with a number of issues, the chief minister should concentrate on them, Bhattacharyya said.
"He holds the Home portfolio in along with being the CM. When the police talk about fighting corruption hard, an SP-level officer is being detained for wrongdoing. The CM ought to focus on resolving the state's issues before using strategies to distract public attention," the Congress leader continued.
The Assam CID recently detained 10 people in the Bajali district while looking into a case of alleged extortion, including SP and DSP level police personnel.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera sharing a video clip of Sarma's statement wrote on X (formally Twitter), “Here, chief minister of Assam @himantabiswa is questioning @varungandhi80’s right to have the Gandhi surname.”
Another Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also shared the same clip and said, “You got your name from your father Shri Kailash Nath Sarma ji, right? Similarly, Rajiv ji had an affair with his father Feroze Gandhi and the same happened with his grandson too.”
