Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday assured that peace will be restored in Manipur, which has been in the grip of ethnic violence for more than three months as a result of clashes between Metieis and Kukis. Modi's remark came as he spoke on the no-confidence motion brought against his government by the opposition in the Lok Sabha over the Manipur issue. He stated that the central and state governments are doing everything possible and that the accused would face the most extreme punishment.
"Both the state and central governments are doing everything possible to ensure that the accused get the most severe punishment. I want to assure the people that peace will be restored in Manipur in the near future. I want to tell the people of Manipur, including women and daughters, that the country is with you," he said in the Lower House of Parliament.
During the initial phase of the PM's speech, where he trained his guns on the opposition, there was enormous sloganeering from the other side, who sought his comments on Manipur.
During his speech, Modi targeted the Congress-led INDIA bloc, claiming that the no-confidence motion was a floor test for the Opposition and that the Bharatiya Janata Party would achieve a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
In response to the debate on Congress' no-confidence motion, PM Modi stated, "I had said during the no-confidence motion in 2018 that it was not a floor test for us but a floor test for them, and as a result they lost in the elections."
"In a way, the Opposition's lack of confidence has always been fortunate for us. Today, I see that you (the opposition) have decided that the NDA and BJP will return to power in 2024 with a resounding win, breaking all past records, with the people's blessings," the PM further said.
