Digital Desk: Coastal districts in northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh are bracing for severe rains as a deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal intensifies into Cyclonic Storm 'Michaung' in the next 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the IMD, the cyclonic formation was located approximately 440 kilometres east-southeast of Puducherry and 420 kilometres southeast of Chennai.

During the next 24 hours, the deep depression is expected to move west-northwestwards and build into a Cyclonic Storm over the Southwest Bay of Bengal.

The storm will then proceed northwest, reaching the west-central Bay of Bengal off the beaches of south Andhra Pradesh and bordering north Tamil Nadu by Monday forenoon, according to the IMD's latest forecast.

Cyclone Michaung is projected to reach its maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph, as it crosses the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam on December 5.

The IMD further indicated that damage to buildings and susceptible structures is predicted over South Andhra Pradesh's coastal regions as well as adjoining coastal districts of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

    RAIN ALERT-

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in a few spots along the north coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Sunday. The IMD predicts isolated heavy rain on December 4 and then a reduction. Chennai, the state capital, is also expected to see severe rainfall in the following days.

The Chennai Met Department also issued a rain, thunderstorm, and lightning warning for Saturday night for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

    Coastal Andhra Pradesh

Most areas will see light to moderate rain, with heavy to very heavy rain expected over south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. On Monday and Tuesday, heavy to very heavy rain fell in scattered locations along the coast of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. On December 6, the state is likely to get isolated heavy showers.

Rayalaseema may also get light to moderate rainfall in most areas, with isolated severe rain on Sunday and Monday.

    ODISHA

Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over south coastal and adjoining south interior Odisha between Monday and Wednesday.

    TAMIL NADU

As cyclone Michaung is predicted to make landfall in coastal regions, police and officials throughout Tamil Nadu have been placed on high alert.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 18 teams to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Puducherry, with an extra 10 teams standing by to deal with any unforeseen situation.

Due to the forecasted heavy rainfall, officials have declared a holiday for schools and institutions in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, and Thiruvallur districts on Monday.

In light of the scenario, Madras University and Anna University have postponed exams scheduled for Monday.
