Delhi’s Sarojini Market to follow odd-even scheme on weekends to avoid rush

New Delhi: After visuals of shoppers falling on each other and jostling for space while walking through the crowded trails of Delhi’s famed Sarojini market went viral, the administration has decided to implement odd-even scheme on weekends to avoid crowding.

The Delhi government released the order mentioning the issuance of odd-even scheme in Sarojini market during the weekends, applicable from December 24, to prevent the market area to become a super-spreader.

Owing to concerns rising out of increasing number of Omicron variant cases and hike in Covid cases, the state government of Delhi has initiated curbs and restrictions for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

A meeting of all stakeholders of Sarojini Market was held on Friday with regards to the proper maintenance of all necessary Covid protocols during the festivities. The stakeholders will be overseeing that no unauthorized vendors is operating in the market and no encroachments are visible in the entire market.

Apart from the odd-even scheme, guards with sanitisers and thermometers have been deployed at all gates at Sarojini market.

It maybe mentioned here that Delhi has reported 67 cases of Omicron with total active Covid caseload recorded as 782 and test positivity rate at 0.29 percent.

Delhi saw a sudden jump in the number in its total cases because of the Omicron variant. A constant rise in the number of Covid cases has been projected in the last two-three days.

Keeping in view of the prevailing pandemic situation in the country, following the entry of Omicron variant, many states have issued night curfew, limited gatherings and curbs on Christmas and New Year celebrations to avoid spread of the infection.

States that have initiated night curfew are as follows:-

1. Madhya Pradesh
2. Gujarat
3. Uttar Pradesh
4. Haryana

Also, district administrations have imposed Section 144 in several locations where there is a probability of the area becoming a Covid hotspot due to mass gatherings.
