Digital Desk: A Delhi court has extended the judicial custody of former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia until November 22 in connection with a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the now-defunct Delhi excise policy. The case was registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had arrested Sisodia on March 9 following questioning in Tihar Jail. Sisodia resigned from his position in the Delhi cabinet on February 28.
The case against Sisodia stems from a CBI FIR, and the ED has been working to establish a link between the alleged bribe paid to manipulate the Delhi excise policy and money laundering. The Supreme Court recently stated that the ED must demonstrate that the bribe is part of a predicate offense to substantiate the charge of money laundering against Sisodia.
The controversial Delhi excise policy, implemented on November 17, 2021, was terminated in September 2022 amid allegations of corruption. Investigating agencies claim that the policy, when modified, favored certain entities by increasing profit margins, resulting in cartelization. The government of Delhi and Sisodia have consistently denied any wrongdoing, contending that the policy changes aimed to boost the state's excise revenue.
The case continues to draw attention as legal proceedings unfold, and the judicial custody extension indicates that the matter is far from being resolved.
