Delhi IAS Coaching Incident: MCD begins 'bulldozer action' to demolish illegal structures of institutes, 5 more arrested

The Delhi Police have apprehended seven individuals related to the incident, including the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre.

Digital Desk: The Delhi Police have arrested five additional individuals in connection with the deaths of three civil services aspirants who perished when their coaching institute's basement was inundated with rainwater.

This brings the total number of arrests to seven. On Monday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) carried out a demolition operation in Old Rajendra Nagar to remove illegal encroachments.

A case has been filed under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 105 (culpable homicide), 106(1) (death resulting from a negligent act), 115(2) (punishment for causing hurt), 290 (negligent conduct concerning building maintenance), and 3(5).

Earlier, the coaching centre owners instructed students to vacate basement libraries following the MCD’s enforcement action against coaching centres that violated building regulations. On Sunday, the MCD sealed the basements of 13 coaching centres in Karol Bagh, despite protests from students. Mayor Shelly Oberoi has called for strict measures against coaching centres operating unlawfully in basements.

The Delhi Police have apprehended seven individuals related to the incident, including the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre. They are charged with culpable homicide among other offenses.

"Five additional arrests have been made, including the basement owners and an individual who drove a vehicle that damaged the building's gate. No permission was granted for commercial activities in the basement," stated DCP Central M Harshavardhan to ANI.

The DCP also mentioned that the police are seeking information from the MCD and examining their involvement in the case. The investigation is ongoing. The police have urged protesting students to maintain peace and avoid blocking main roads, promising strict action regarding the case.
"Negligence has been confirmed on the part of the arrested driver, who was speeding and damaged the coaching centre's gate. Prior to this, a street vendor had attempted to stop him," added the DCP.
