Speaking of Sisodia's detention, he questioned what fresh development had occurred that had led the organisation to make the decision to detain him.
Digital Desk: The Delhi Police have allegedly imprisoned 80% of the Aam Aadmi Party's leaders since Sunday, and the party has questioned whether anyone can be held for longer than 24 hours.
On Sunday, the CBI detained Manish Sisodia, the deputy chief minister of Delhi, in connection with allegations of corruption in the excise policy that has since been scrapped. Meanwhile, police detained 50 protesters near the CBI office where Sisodia was being questioned, including AAP MP Sanjay Singh and minister Gopal Rai.
Police reported that the Sunday detained leaders were being released today.
The protracted detention was illegal, according to AAP national spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj, who also drew comparisons between the current situation and the emergency period under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
"Since yesterday, the Aam Aadmi Party has made repeated claims that about 80% of the party's leadership has been detained by the police, in addition to Manish Sisodia ji. The central government responds that they have only been detained when questioned " he said.
"Whether the detention is for an hour, two hours, or three hours, please let me know. Can authorities detain such powerful figures for a full 24 hours now that it has been 24 hours? Such a clause is not included in the statute "He expressed his opinion.
Noting that it is "illegal" to hold someone for so long, he asserted that the leaders ought to have appeared in court by now.
"By now, you ought to have produced them in court and explained why and under what provisions you had detained the Rajya Sabha MP. Gopal Rai, a top leader in Delhi, is currently in custody. The organization's work manager, Adil Ahmed Khan, was also detained. Since yesterday, the police have detained dozens of elected councillors and MLAs. They stayed in the police station all night. They have not yet been released by police " he said.
According to Bhardwaj, these are "signs of emergency," and the Narendra Modi administration at the Center is acting similarly to how former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed emergency measures in 1975.
"These are extremely risky signs. These emergency warning indicators exist. It is unacceptable that you imprisoned all the leaders without justification. The central government should explain why our top officials were detained and imprisoned "he stated.
Speaking of Sisodia's detention, he questioned what fresh development had occurred that had led the organisation to make the decision to detain him.
"I scanned every newspaper today to find out whether he had any new charges brought against him (Sisodia). The story was the same tired one that CBI has been telling since May of last year "He declared. He said the CBI has all the papers but nothing has been uncovered against Sisodia, casting doubt on the need for his detention.
"I'm curious as to why the arrest had to be made right away. Was he trying to flee the nation? Why would he run now if he hasn't in the last ten months? Was he manipulating people or erasing proof? He had numerous opportunities in the previous eight months and could have taken advantage of them, so why would he do it now? “He said.
Anil Baijal, a former LG who approved and announced the liquor policy, should also be investigated, according to Bhardwaj.
"The most important thing we learned from the newspapers is that the created policy contains corruption. Everyone is aware that the policy was authorised and announced by former LG Anil Baijal. Baijal was picked by the Center on its own. What has CBI been doing for the past 10 months if he authorised this policy? Why did the CBI not question him? “he asked.
He reiterated that the AAP is being "tortured" by the Centre and declared that the party would protest the changes in a peaceful manner outside the BJP's headquarters.
