    'No more Prasar Bharati...it's Prachar Bharati': Doordarshan changes logo colour from red to saffron, sparks row

    Former Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari of the Congress claimed that the government was trying to seize control of government organizations by changing the logo's color from 2012 to 2014. 

    Digital Desk: The historic red logo of national broadcaster Doordarshan has been replaced with a saffron one. DD News announced via their official X handle, writing in a post, "While our values remain the same, we are now available in a new avatar."

    However, the Opposition is seeing red over the change.

    Former CEO of Prasar Bharati (DD, AIR) and Rajya Sabha member Jawhar Sircar criticized the move, claiming to have been seeing the "saffronisation" of the national broadcaster.

    "National broadcaster Doordarshan colours its historic flagship logo in saffron! As its ex-CEO, I have been watching its saffronisation with alarm and feel — it's not Prasar Bharati any more — it's Prachar Bharati!” (sic), he wrote on X.

    Former Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari of the Congress claimed that the government was trying to seize control of government organizations by changing the logo's color from 2012 to 2014. 

    In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Tewari stated, "The government is attempting to saffronism and capture control of the government institutions. The public broadcaster in India is losing its credibility and impartiality as a result of the aforementioned action." 

    In response, BJP's Andhra Pradesh state vice-president said, "When Doordarshan was launched in 1959, it had a saffron logo. Now, as the government reintroduces the original logo, liberals and Congress are outraging over it."

    "It's blatantly obvious they harbor hate against 'Bhagwa' and Hindus," (sic), he wrote on X.

    Prasar Bharti CEO Gaurav Dwivedi defended the national broadcaster's decision, pointing out the new logo's eye-catching orange coloration. The visual aesthetic has changed. 

     "The colour is orange, not saffron," he asserted. 

    "We have updated the complete appearance and feel, not simply the logo. People are reading too much into this, which is wrong and regrettable. We spent the last six to eight months trying to revamp DD's appearance and feel," he stated.

    Doordarshan has altered the colour of its symbol over time to red, blue, and yellow. Nonetheless, the globe and the two petals in the middle of the logo have not changed. 

     History of Doordarshan 

    On September 15, 1959, Doordarshan was initially broadcast as a public service broadcast. In 1965, it started broadcasting morning and evening shows every day from Delhi. 

    The services were extended to Mumbai, Amritsar and other cities by 1975. 
     It was given to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on April 1, 1976, and Doordarshan took over as the country's main broadcaster in 1982. 

    Later on, in 1984, the DD network included more channels in its service offering.

    Doordarshan currently operates 17 regional and six national channels.
