FIR Filed Against WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

Mumbai: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has filed a complaint against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for disrespecting the national anthem by allegedly singing an incomplete anthem in a sitting position during a press conference here on Wednesday.

BJP Mumbai Secretary Vivekanand Gupta, who filed the complaint to Mumbai Police Commissioner via email, read, “Mamata Banerjee, who during her visit to Mumbai in a programme, started to sing the national anthem while in a sitting position, and thereafter stood up, and after four or five verses abruptly stopped the national anthem.”

“This act of Ms. Mamata Banerjee, of abruptly stopping the national anthem, amounts to showing utter disrespect to the national anthem, and thus she committed an offense under section 3 of the prevention of insults to National Honour Act, 1971. Her act also goes against the order of the Home Ministry of 2015.” He added in the FIR.

Minutes after this conference, several political parties and leaders slammed Banerjee for her action, including BJP Bengal, who tweeted, “Mamata Banerjee was sitting down at first then stood up and stopped singing the national anthem of India halfway. Today, as a Chief Minister, she has insulted the culture of Bengal, the national anthem and the country, and the Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore!”
“Our national anthem is one of the most powerful manifestations of our national identity. The least people holding public office can do is not demean it. Here is a mutilated version of our national anthem sung by Bengal CM. Is India’s opposition so bereft of pride and patriotism?” BJP leader Amit Malviya tweeted.

The West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was on a visit to Mumbai to meet Nationalist Congress Party India (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar after meeting Shiv Sena leaders a day before.
While in the meeting with the NCP chief taking a jibe at Congress, Mamata Banerjee said there is no UPA now.

Notably, the statement comes when Mamata Banerjee is trying to gather momentum and prepare a template ahead of the Lok Sabha 2024 elections to stand against the ruling BJP
