Digital Desk: The first charter flight carrying Indians stuck in Israel was scheduled to fly out on Thursday night. On a "first come, first serve" basis, this flight will transport roughly 230 Indians living in Israel, reports said.
According to news agency PTI, the plane will leave Israel at 9 pm and no fare will be charged from the passengers. The expense of their return is covered by the government.
On the first trip home, assistance will also be provided for those who were unable to travel to India because Air India promptly halted its route from Israel on October 7.
Amid Israel's current conflict with Hamas militants, the Indian government is attempting to rescue Indians who have become stranded there. According to S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, Indians are being evacuated as part of "Operation Ajay."
He attended a meeting earlier today to go through plans for the first charter flight leaving Israel.
In the past, he also established a 24-hour control room in Delhi and separate emergency helplines in Tel Aviv and Ramallah to monitor the situation and provide information and assistance to Indians who might need it.
The Indian Embassy in Israel said in a tweet that it has sent emails to the first batch of Indian individuals who had registered for the special flight on Thursday. "Messages to other registered people will follow for subsequent flights," it read.
Israel, which is at war with the Palestinian organisation Hamas, is home to more than 20,000 Indians, according to Kobbi Shoshani, the consul general of Israel in Mumbai. Shoshani continued by saying he was unsure of the exact number of Indians stranded in Israel.
