Digital Desk: The Indian government has extended the Ceasefire Agreement with three factions of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) for another year.
The Ceasefire Agreement with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Neopao Konyak/Kitovi) (NSCN-NK) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland/Reformation (NSCN-R) would be extended from April 28, 2023 to April 27, 2024.
Meanwhile, the Ceasefire Agreement with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K-Khango) will be extended from April 18, 2023, to April 17, 2024.
On April 6, 2023, these agreements were signed.
The National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) is a Naga nationalistic and separatist organisation based primarily in Northeast India, with small operations in northwest Myanmar.
The organisation's principal goal is to create a sovereign Naga state, "Nagalim," consisting of all Naga-inhabited lands in Northeast India and northwest Myanmar.
There are two main groups within the NSCN: NSCN-K, led by SS Khaplang, and NSCN-IM, led by Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah. The remaining NSCN is made up of smaller groups.
The NSCN-K was labelled a terrorist organisation by India in 2015 as a result of an attack on an army convoy in Manipur. This was done in accordance with the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. According to India's Ministry of Home Affairs, the NSCN is a major rebel organisation.
The NSCN is active in the Northeastern area, with the group having the most influence and presence in Nagaland and the hill districts of Manipur.
It also has a presence in Nagaland's neighbouring states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Outside of India, the NSCN has been active in Naga-populated areas in northern Myanmar.
On August 3, 2015, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian government inked a framework agreement with the influential Naga faction NSCN-IM to find a long-term resolution.
The NSCN-IM, however, has insisted on a separate Naga flag and constitution, which the central government has refused, therefore negotiations with the organisation have not yet yielded any results.
Separately, following ceasefire agreements, the government is holding peace talks with NSCN splinter factions.
