In 2017, when it won 77 seats and kept the BJP from winning 99, the Congress fared well. This time, however, it started late because it was preoccupied with electing the party president.

Digital Desk: Voting in the first phase of the Gujarat Assembly elections will take place on December 1. Voting for 89 seats will take place in phase one. The ruling BJP is aiming for a record-breaking seventh consecutive term in office.

After the introduction of Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, the Gujarat election, which was previously a direct struggle between the BJP and Congress, became a triangular election.

According to the Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer, 788 candidates will be contesting in the first phase across 19 districts in South Gujarat and the Kutch-Saurashtra area. There are 339 independents and 70 female candidates among them.

It is to be noted that 14 seats out of the 89 are set aside for Scheduled Tribes, and seven are for Dalits. Voting will begin at 8 am and continue till 5:30 pm.

There are 1,24,33,362 men, 1,15,42,811 women, and 497 voters of a third gender among the 2,39,76,670 eligible voters who can cast ballots in the first phase.

25,430 polling places have been set up by the Indian Election Commission for phase one, 16,416 of which are in rural regions and 9,014 in urban ones.

The 182-member assembly's second round of voting will take place on December 5, and the results will be tallied on December 8.

The BJP is confident and believes that this time, it will win more seats than ever before. 42 of the party's current MLAs were denied a ticket. Nine of the 19 rebels it must face are competing in the opening round of the race.

In the 2017 Assembly elections, the party position did well, winning 77 seats while keeping the BJP at 99.

In 2017, when it won 77 seats and kept the BJP from winning 99, the Congress fared well. This time, however, it started late because it was preoccupied with electing the party president. Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader, spoke at two polling places. Some experts argued that this was too little, too late.

They anticipate a vote shift in favour of the newcomer and consider AAP as a greater threat to Congress than the BJP.

Former journalist, Isudan Gadhvi has been named as the AAP's chief ministerial candidate. The party presents itself as the BJP's rival.
