    Gujrat Cable Bridge Collapse: At least 132 killed, PM Modi cancels road show
    Rescue efforts for people who fell into the Machhu river have been ongoing all night long thanks to the five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

    Digital Desk: In Gujarat's Morbi district on Sunday night, a cable bridge that was crossing the Machchhu river collapsed, killing at least 132 people.

    "There have been approximately 177 rescues. 19 persons are receiving medical care. The NDRF, Fire Brigade, Army, Navy, and Air Force are conducting search operations "Gujarat Information Department stated.

    Rescue efforts for people who fell into the Machhu river have been ongoing all night long thanks to the five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

    Major Gaurav, Indian Army said, "The rescue operation is still underway. Indian Army had reached here around 3 at night. We are trying to recover the bodies. Teams of NDRF are also carrying out rescue operations." 



    Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the matter and immediately ordered the urgent mobilisation of teams for rescue operations. The injured were taken directly to Morbi civil hospital while several bodies were pulled from the river and transported for post-mortem examination.

    Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, hurried to Morbi after the event to personally oversee the rescue efforts and medical assistance. He also promised an ex gratia of Rs. 4 lakh for the surviving family members of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the accident victims who needed financial assistance. The chief minister is probably going to set up camp in Morbi until the rescue efforts are complete.



    Even Prime Minister Modi announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for each person who died in the Morbi accident. The injured will receive 50,000 rupees.

    Harsh Sanghavi, the minister of home for Gujarat, also went to the scene of the tragedy in Morbi."A criminal case has been registered. An investigation has begun today under the leadership of Range IGP," he said.

    Meanwhile, state Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said that the injured are being treated at hospitals and many of them have also been sent to their homes after treatment.

    In light of the Morbi cable bridge collapse disaster, PM Modi, who is on a three-day trip to Gujarat and Rajasthan, has chosen to postpone his roadshow scheduled for Ahmedabad on Monday.

    Around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, the century-old bridge, which had only reopened five days earlier following significant repairs and renovations, fell as it was packed with people.
