Heavy rain hits Mumbai: 50 flights cancelled, train services hit, schools shut
The downpour has led to the cancellation of over 50 flights, prompting several airlines to use social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to advise passengers to check their flight statuses before heading to the airport.

Digital Desk: Mumbai and its surrounding areas have been battered by heavy rains over the past 24 hours, resulting in extensive waterlogging and disruption of suburban train services. Some parts of the city received more than 300 mm of rainfall between 1 am and 7 am on Monday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and the Konkan belt. Vikhroli's Veer Savarkar Marg Municipal School and MCMCR Powai recorded the highest rainfall, exceeding 315 mm.

The downpour has led to the cancellation of over 50 flights, prompting several airlines to use social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to advise passengers to check their flight statuses before heading to the airport.

At Dombivli station, commuters waited on submerged tracks, while waterlogging was reported in various areas including Worli, Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East, King's Circle, Dadar, and Vidyavihar Railway Station. Approximately 30 lakh commuters rely on Mumbai's suburban train network daily, which has been severely affected along with Thane, Palghar, and Raigad.

Train services between Kasara and Titwala stations were halted due to soil covering the tracks between Atgaon and Thansit stations, disrupting traffic on the busy Kalyan-Kasara route.

Officials mentioned that if the rainfall ceases for more than two hours, the waterlogging is expected to recede, but the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall throughout the day. Additionally, high tide around 2 pm is anticipated to bring sea waves as high as 4.4 meters.

Numerous trains have been diverted, rescheduled, or terminated due to waterlogging between Kalyan and Kasara stations of Mumbai division. Flash floods on the Vasind-Khardi section caused damage to the track embankment between 3 am and 6 am, according to officials from the news agency PTI.

Currently, multiple teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are deployed in Thane, Vasai (Palghar), Mahad (Raigad), Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Ghatkopar, Kurla, and Sindhudurg. They have conducted rescue operations, including the evacuation of 49 individuals from a waterlogged resort in Thane and 16 villagers in Palghar using boats and life jackets due to the flooding.
