In Karnataka, Himanta Biswa Sarma again rakes up Tipu Sultan issue: Know more
Sarma criticised the Left's narratives and asserted that the "New India" requires a history that honours the sacrifices made by "our heroes to protect their land and dharma."

Digital Desk: Ahead of the Karnataka assembly election, Assam chief Himanta Biswa Sarma once again brought up the Tipu Sultan controversy on Sunday. He questioned if the erstwhile ruler of Mysore was a “freedom fighter”, what about the “80,000 Kodavas” who died “for their homeland”.

Sarma criticised the Left's narratives and asserted that the "New India" requires a history that honours the sacrifices made by "our heroes to protect their land and dharma."

The Assam Chief minister taking Twitter wrote, “If we were to even examine the argument that #TipuSultan is a freedom fighter solely because he fought against the British to defend his kingdom, what about the 80,000 Kodavas who bravely sacrificed their lives for their homeland and to safeguard our culture and Dharma? Enough of history written by the left. New India needs a history that recognizes the sacrifices made by our heroes to protect their land and dharma.”

In the political corridors of Karnataka, the discussion around Tipu Sultan, the former 18th-century king of Mysore, has taken the front stage. According to the Bharatiya Janata Party, VD Savarkar and Tipu Sultan would contest the forthcoming election instead of the BJP and Congress.

Sarma attacked the Congress on Saturday while campaigning in poll-bound Karnataka and referred to its leaders Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar as "family members" of Tipu Sultan.

Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar are Tipu Sultan's relatives, claimed Sarma at an electoral rally at the Kodagu district's Virajpet assembly.

"I'm from Assam, where we were attacked by the Mughals 17 times, but they were unable to defeat us, so we are still unbeaten," he said. Because the Kodagu people repeatedly resisted Tipu Sultan, I bow to this hallowed country now, he added.

The BJP leader added that Siddaramaiah should celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanti in Pakistan if he planned to.

"80,000 people gave their lives in sacrifice. And Siddaramaiah announced today that they would observe Tipu Sultan Jayanti. Visit Pakistan and Bangladesh to celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanti if you wish. But in India, you don't have any authority to do that, Sarma stated.

"If the Congress comes, then slowly Karnataka will also become PFI valley," he asserted.

In line with the Popular Front of India, the Congress promises in its manifesto to ban the Bajrang Dal in Karnataka if it wins power. This pledge has sparked a significant political backlash.
