The intelligence services also noted that different organisations have a history of using protests to draw attention to their problems before, during, or even after significant events.
Digital Desk: Central intelligence agencies have warned of Kuki or Meitei group protests during Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort and have also raised the possibility of "some anti-government elements" displaying "flags/ placards/ shouting slogans" when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the nation and hoists the Tricolour, The Indian Express reported.
These were some of the potential threats discussed at a recent meeting between intelligence agencies and the Special Protection Group (SPG), the CISF, the Delhi Police, and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in the New Delhi district to discuss the most recent threat information as well as the security preparedness ahead of Independence Day.
The meeting, according to an official, highlighted the fact that Independence Day (I-Day) this year falls less than a month before the G20 Summit in September in Delhi and any adversarial incident before or during the function will have a "negative impact" on the country's reputation and its readiness to host a high-profile, multilateral event.
The intelligence services also noted that different organisations have a history of using protests to draw attention to their problems before, during, or even after significant events.
An official stated that the primary concerns highlighted as pertinent from a security standpoint for this year's event included the Manipur situation, the farmers' demand, the Uniform Civil Code, along with difficulties linked to labor/services.
An official stated that when sharing threat information with the Delhi Police and other security agencies, "they have been asked to get genuine/early updates on protests/demonstrations and told that they should also coordinate with the police departments of neighbouring states to keep track of mobilisation and movement of potential protesters towards Delhi."
The person added that "the central intelligence agencies also warned about social media, which is being used more frequently to radicalise and mobilise people, threaten dignitaries, and offer rewards for such actions."
A Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba operative who had instructed his associates to conduct reconnaissance of some locations in Delhi, including the National Investigation Agency and Delhi Police headquarters, was one of the major issues that the central intelligence agencies discussed.
