By 2024, there will only be about 150 million 2G subscribers, down from the current 350 million, who primarily use Vodafone Idea, Airtel, and the government-owned BSNL.

Recent estimates indicate that since the service's October 2017 introduction, there are already more than 20 million 5G subscribers in the nation. Reliance Jio is reportedly planning to have 100 million 5G subscribers by the end of FY 24; if it succeeds, the Nokia figure may be eclipsed.

The cumulative 5G smartphone shipments will reach 100 million by Q2 2023, exceeding 4G smartphone shipments by the end of 2023, according to Nokia, which on Thursday released the India Mobile Broadband Index report for 2023.

According to the estimate, India received more than 70 million 5G devices in 2022. There were 85 million 5G-capable phones among the 730 million active 4G subscribers. It was noted that increased service accessibility will cause the growth of 5G smartphones to exceed 62% year-over-year in 2023.

Nokia predicts that the implementation of 5G would result in a significant rise in data usage: average monthly usage per user will climb by more than 136%, from 19.5 GB in 2022 to 46 GB in 2027. In the same year, the average mobile broadband penetration will reach 82 percent. Simply put, India will continue to be one of the world's top data consumers.

India has approved a plan allowing businesses to establish their private networks and directly purchase spectrum. The government and regulator TRAI are still formulating the policy's specifics, which telecom businesses reject.

According to a Nokia analysis, data traffic increased 3.2 times between 2018 and 2022, from 4.5 exabytes monthly to 14.4 exabytes in 2022.
