Digital Desk: NCERT director Dinesh Prasad Saklani has clarified that chapters on the Mughals have not been "dropped" from CBSE textbooks, labeling recent reports a "lie." Saklani stated that the curriculum was rationalized in order to relieve students of stress.
"It's a lie. Chapters on the Mughals have not been dropped. Last year, there was a rationalization process because COVID was putting strain on students everywhere... Expert committees reviewed the books from grades 6 to 12. They suggested that dropping this chapter would not have an impact on the kids' understanding and would relieve them of an unnecessary burden. The debate is pointless. Those who are unsure should check their textbooks," the NCERT said in a video interview with ANI.
A firestorm of debate erupted after it was recently reported that chapters such as The Mughal Empire and ‘Kings and Courts’ will be removed from 12th-grade history books after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recently announced that the syllabus for CBSE Class 12th will be revised.
Reportedly, the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has chosen to remove the chapters "Kings and Chronicles" and "The Mughal Courts" from CBSE Class 12 Mediaeval History textbooks. The revision will apply to all institutions that use NCERT textbooks and courses. Following CBSE, the Uttar Pradesh (UP) state Board adopted the measure.
"The content of the textbooks has been rationalized for a variety of reasons, including overlapping with similar content in other subject areas in the same class, similar content included in lower or higher classes on the same subject," the NCERT stated in a note.
