Digital Desk: On Friday, August 18, Journalist Vimal Kumar, who worked for a Hindi daily, was killed in Bihar's Araria region. Police have filed a complaint and are conducting an investigation.
According to reports, the incident occurred early in the morning in the Raniganj Bazar area.
As reported by Araria SP Ashok Kumar Singh, a post-mortem is being conducted and a dog squad has been dispatched to the crime scene. "Investigation is ongoing, and efforts to apprehend the perpetrators are in progress," he stated.
In response to the incident, Amarendra Singh, President of the Araria District Journalist Association, stated, "The manner in which a reporter was shot dead in the morning is very shocking and particularly reflects the state of the police system."
"According to the general consensus, his brother was likewise slain two years ago, and he (Vimal) was involved in this case. It is also claimed that he received threats regularly and that he relayed this information to the police. However, whether that is true or not will be studied. However, the tragedy that occurred today is heartbreaking," Singh added.
Taking a dig onto the incident and politically turning it, Chirag Paswan, the leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), slammed the Nitish-led Bihar government, saying, "Which class is not being targeted here, journalists are being targeted separately, administrative class people are being targeted separately, and deprived and backward class people are being targeted separately. While the Chief Minister (Nitish Kumar) travels to Delhi."
Notably, a surge in journalists' death has been seen, in a study by the Committee to Protect Journalists, 2022 coincided with a "deadly" year for the media, with at least 67 journalists and media workers slain.
