    Kolkata mother arrested for selling 21-day-old daughter for Rs 4 lakh; Baby Girl rescued

    Digital Desk: In Kolkata, a woman was arrested for reportedly selling her newborn girl child to another woman. Rupali Mondal, the accused mother, is alleged to have sold her baby for Rs 4 lakh.


    Officials at Anandapur police station obtained information regarding the illicit transaction Rupali, a resident of Kolkata's Nonadanga's Rail colony, had struck in lieu of her not-even-a-month-old daughter.


    The mother was subsequently questioned by police, but according to sources, she failed to provide suitable answers to officials. As a result, the woman was arrested on Monday morning and later confessed to the murder. The confession led to the arrest of two more people, Rupa Das and Swapna Sardar.


    A complaint was filed by Rupali's next-door neighbour, Pratima Bhuinya. The accused have been charged under sections 317 (abandoning child), 370 (purchasing, disposing of person), 372 (selling minor), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy), as well as applicable provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children) Act.


    After a rigorous interrogation of both suspects, they pointed to one Kalyani Guha from Midnapur, Guha was detained by Parnarsree police station personnel, who also rescued the baby from her room.


    It was discovered that Kalyani Guha is a childless woman who has been married for 15 years. The minor daughter was securely rescued and will be handed over to the childcare unit.
