NSF, NPR to continue democratic agitations against Centre until AFSPA is withdrawn

Digital Desk: The Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) and Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) have both decided to continue democratic agitations against the contentious AFSPA act until the Centre doesn’t withdraw it.

In its latest extension of the Armed Forces Act (AFSPA)in Nagaland, for another six months, amidst the row over the killing of 14 civilians by the security forces in the state, the civil societies have decided to hold protests against the controversial act.

In its decision to continue their protests, the NPF said it is appalled and outraged over the Centre of extending the law in Nagaland for further six months with effect from Thursday.

Expressing anger over the decision, the NPF Press Bureau said that the extension is a tight slap on the meeting that was convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This extension is a manifestation of the utter disregard of the central government for the small states, particularly in north east India, considering that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly has convened a special one-day session on December 20 to deliberate on AFSPA and unanimously resolved to demand its repeal.

The NPF in its press bureau said that the organization is committed towards removal of DAA and AFSPA from all Naga inhabited areas and asserted that it will not sit idle till the Centre reconsiders its decision.

The NSF is an influential body comprising of Naga students in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland. In its plea to the Centre, the NSF said, “The extension of the draconian AFSPA for another six months is an insult to Nagas at this time of grief.”

The NSF also urged its people not to accept any humanitarian care from anyone until their demand of the repeal of AFSPA is entirely accepted.
