The killings of the Kashmiri Pandits during the Kashmir insurgency are the focus of Vivek Agnihotri's film The Kashmir Files.
Digital Desk: The Kashmir Files is making headlines again! The Kashmir Files was referred to as a "propaganda, vulgar film" by jury chairman Nadav Lapid during the 53rd IFFI Goa closing ceremony. Sudipto Sen, a member of the IFFI jury, used Twitter to provide clarification following a significant criticism. He declared that his personal opinion is represented in Nadav Lapid's remarks on The Kashmir Files. He continued by saying that he avoided making any political remarks while sitting as a judge.
Sudipto Sen, a member of the jury and a filmmaker, clarified the controversies on Twitter.
He wrote, "Whatever has been said by IFFI 2022 Jury Chairman Mr Nadav Lapid about the film, The Kashmir Files, from the stage of closing ceremony of 53-rd IFFI was completely his personal opinion. In the offiial presentation of the Jury Board to the Festival Director and in the official Press Conference, where we 4 juries (the fifth jury had to leave for her emergency) were present and interacted with the press, we never mentioned anything about our likes or dislikes. Both were our official collective opinion (sic)."
He added, "As juror, we are assigned to judge the technical, aesthetic quality and socio-cultural relevance of a film. We don't indulge in any kind of political comments on any film and if it is done, it is completely in personal capacity - nothing to do with the esteemed Jury Board (sic)."
The jury for this year's IFFI included Nadav Lapid, Javier Angulo Barturen (a French documentary filmmaker), Sudipto Sen (an Indian writer and director), Pascale Chavance (a French film editor), and Jinko Gotoh (a US producer of animated films).
Nadav Lapid, the chairman of the jury, spoke during the IFFI's closing ceremony. Additionally, he expressed his criticism about The Kashmir Files.
He stated, "We are all troubled. For an aesthetic competitive component of such a famous competition, it seemed to us to be a "propaganda, vulgar movie." Since the festival embraces critical discourse, which is necessary for both art and life, I feel completely at ease voicing these emotions in public."
The killings of the Kashmiri Pandits during the Kashmir insurgency are the focus of Vivek Agnihotri's film The Kashmir Files. Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Josh play significant parts in the 1990s-set movie. The movie turned out among the highest-grossing movies of 2022.
