Ashwini Kumar Choubey, the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, responded to a question in the Rajya Sabha by saying that lower production during the kharif season and increased demand seen over the festive period were responsible for the increase in tomato prices.

The Essential Commodities Act of 1955 and the Prevention of Black-marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act of 1980 should also be enforced, according to the advice given to the states and union territories. Additionally, the government has gone out of its way to make it easier to import onions and tomatoes from other nations, which has increased their domestic availability and helped to moderate prices.
According to information from the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation, and Farmers Welfare, there was a significant increase in the quantity of new tomato crops grown in Maharashtra, rising from 72,000 quintals in October to 1,68,000 quintals in November. It is anticipated that this boost in supply would lead to decreased tomato prices soon, providing much-needed relief to consumers.
