Not Fastag!! Now toll tax will be deducted from the number plate of the vehicle: Know More
FASTag is being used for toll collection around the country. Even then, the central government is now contemplating the abolition of the toll plaza...

Digital Desk: The central government is now considering dismantling the highway toll plaza. Instead, a toll collection system based on cameras will be implemented. Drivers on National Highways will no longer have to stop at toll booths to pay tolls, the FASTag will also not need to be recharged as the tolls will be deducted straight from bank accounts under this procedure by scanning vehicle licence plates.

Tolls will be deducted straight from bank accounts under this procedure by scanning vehicle licence plates. Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras will be used for these purposes.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) asserts that by installing these cameras, vehicle wait times at toll plazas will be decreased. Currently, FASTag is used for approximately 97 percent of toll collection in the country, although the toll plazas remain overcrowded.

Here is some information regarding the soon-to-be-implemented toll collection system- According to the Road Ministry, toll plazas would be omitted from all highways around the country. ANPR will be implemented in place of the toll plaza, which will read the number plate of the car and deduct toll tax from the bank account.

Reportedly, the cameras will be put at the highway's entry and exit locations. The technology will calculate the address distance by photographing the plate, and tolls will be collected properly.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari stated in September that the government is conducting research through a pilot project. This method will also have the advantage of charging tolls based on the distance between vehicles.

According to Gadkari, this new technology can bring two benefits, the first is unrestricted traffic movement at toll booths and the second one is usage-based payment.

The Transport Department will put a digital chip on the high-security plate for the automatic number plate recognition system in newly registered vehicles in the first phase. This chip will contain the vehicle owner's bank account details. Only the Automated Number Plate Recognition System's camera will be able to scan it.

The second phase will comprise state highways.

The number plates of old, private and commercial cars will be replaced with automatic number plates in the third and fourth phases.
