Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi proudly announced that Charaideo Moidam, a historic site in Assam, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in his latest 'Mann Ki Baat' address. This prestigious recognition marks India’s 43rd UNESCO site and is notably the first from the Northeast region.
Charaideo Moidam, often celebrated as the "shining city on the hills," was the inaugural capital of the Ahom dynasty, which governed Assam for nearly 600 years, from the 13th century to the early 19th century. The term "Moidam" refers to the burial mounds that are a significant element of the region's heritage. These mound-like structures, which are covered with soil, house one or more chambers beneath them. They were used to preserve the mortal remains and valuables of Ahom royalty, reflecting the deep reverence for their departed leaders and dignitaries.
Prime Minister Modi elaborated on the historical and cultural importance of Charaideo Moidam, emphasizing its unique tradition of ancestor worship and community rituals. He stated, “Charaideo means a shining city on the hills. This was the first capital of the Ahom dynasty. The people of the Ahom dynasty traditionally kept the mortal remains of their ancestors and their valuables in the Moidam.”
The Prime Minister also highlighted the broader legacy of the Ahom dynasty, noting the principles and beliefs that contributed to the empire’s long-lasting reign. He reminisced about his visit on March 9, 2023, when he unveiled the tallest statue of the great Ahom warrior Lachit Borphukan. Modi praised Borphukan for his valor during the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where he led the Ahom forces to a significant victory against the Mughals.
During the unveiling ceremony, Modi participated in the spiritual traditions of the Ahom community, deepening his connection to the region's cultural heritage.
The inclusion of Charaideo Moidam in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list is anticipated to attract global attention and boost tourism in Assam. Prime Minister Modi expressed hope that this recognition will encourage more visitors to explore this historic site, reinforcing the importance of cultural pride for national progress. The designation of Charaideo Moidam as a UNESCO site is a significant step towards preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Assam and the Northeast region.
