New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate a new international airport in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar on 20th of October.
During the inauguration ceremony the President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa is also likely to be present. Besides this, the Chief Minister of UP Yogi Adityanath, along with a host of other dignitaries which also includes ambassadors of over 15 countries to India is also likely grace the occasion with their presence.
This airport will be India’s 29th international airport. Kushinagar is a culturally and religiously important place for India. It has significant relevance to Buddhism because it is a place where Gautama Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana. Due to this it is also regarded as a major tourist destination for the Buddhist fraternity from across the globe.
According to reports, the maiden international flight will land in the airport from Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo. President Rajapaksa will be onboard with a 125 member delegation, along with several Buddhist monks and pilgrims.

The opening of this new airport is likely to improve the air connectivity to the spot and the eastern Uttar Pradesh as a whole. This will also attract international tourists from across the world to this important Buddhist site. Earlier, tourists had to fly through other cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Gaya to reach Kushinagar.
The airport covers over 590 acres of land, with a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control System and world class facilities.
Moreover, to enhance tourist experience, a large work force is also being trained under the Ministry of Tourism’s incredible India Tourist Facilitator Programme.
