President Murmu approves Delimitation Notification for Assam: CM Sarma

Digital Desk: President Droupadi Murmu accepted the Election Commission's (EC) announcement of the state's delimitation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday.

CM Sarma in his official Twitter handle wrote, ”Today the Honorable President has approved the Delimitation Notification issued by the Election Commission of India for Assam. A significant milestone has been achieved in the history of Assam. Jai Maa Bharati Jai Aai Asom.”

The final report of the Election Commission states that the state would keep its current total of 126 Assembly and 14 parliamentary constituencies. However, the poll panel's final decree changed the names of 19 assembly and 1 parliamentary constituency.

Notably, Scheduled Tribes (STs) now have 19 assembly and two Lok Sabha seats reserved for them, while Scheduled Castes (SCs) currently have one Lok Sabha seat and nine assembly seats. All constituency boundaries were established using data from the 2001 Census.

Certain seats have received "paired names" such Darrang-Udalgiri, Hajo-Sualkuchi, and others in response to public desire. In order to maintain their integrity across the state, the report keeps the administrative units of "village" in rural areas and "ward" in urban areas.

SC assembly seats have risen from eight to nine, and ST assembly seats have expanded from sixteen to nineteen. Additionally, the number of assembly constituencies in Bodoland districts has increased from 11 to 15.
