The remark was made just a few days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned May 28 inauguration ceremony.
Digital Desk: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated on Sunday that the new Parliament building in India should be inaugurated by the President, not the Prime Minister. The remark was made just a few days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned May 28 inauguration ceremony.
Speaker Om Birla met with PM Modi this week and offered an invitation for him to dedicate the new structure, according to a May 18 statement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat. This attracted criticism from opposition figures, and more joined the chorus of protests, saying that the inauguration should be conducted by the head of the legislature, not the head of the government.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi had questioned why the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman were not selected for this important job. Owaisi posted on Twitter, "Why should PM inaugurate Parliament? He is head of the executive, not the legislature. We have a separation of powers & Hon’ble @loksabhaspeaker & RS Chair could have inaugurated. It’s made with public money, why is PM behaving like his 'friends' have sponsored it from their private funds?"
Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, a Trinamool MP, questioned the scheduling, noting in a tweet that Veer Savarkar's birth anniversary falls on the same day as the inauguration. Veer Savarkar is a contentious RSS figure who the BJP, the current government, fervently supports.. "26 November 2023 - Indian Constitution, which gifted parliamentary democracy to the nation, shall step into its 75th year, which would've been befitting for the inauguration of the new Sansad Bhawan. But it shall be done on 28 May, the birthday of Savarkar. How much relevant?" Ray wrote in a tweet.
Jairam Ramesh, the general secretary of the Congress, responded by calling the incident "a blatant disrespect to all our Founding Fathers and Mothers. a complete denial of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Bose, etc. A clear repudiation of Dr Ambedkar."
The Congress has referred to PM Modi's vanity project as the new Parliament building, a remarkable four-story triangular tower with a built-up area of 64,500 square metres. The building's foundation was laid on December 10, 2020, and it can hold 1,280 members in total if both Houses meet together at once.
