Public open hearing of human rights cases organized by NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India is organizing its 'Camp Sitting and Public Open Hearing' to hear the complaints related to the human rights violations from the five Northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim, and Nagaland at Staff College in Guwahati on 16th and 17th December 2021.

NHRC Chairperson Justice Arun Kumar Mishra inaugurated the ‘Camp Sitting and Public Open Hearing’ at Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati, NHRC Deputy Director (Media and Communication) Jaimini Kumar Srivastava said in a statement.

The NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) organized a  two-day public hearing in Guwahati from Thursday to hear 40 cases related to human rights violations from Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Sikkim. Where 23 cases are registered from Assam, 13 cases from Manipur  1 case from Arunachal, and 3 from Nagaland.

The NHRC has been organizing such open hearings in different states of the country since 2007 and has so far held more than 40 such sittings with the objective of quick disposal of cases and creating awareness about human rights at the grassroots.

On the 4th of December, 14 civilians were killed in firing by the Indian Army in the Mon District of Nagaland.

The soldiers mistook the civilians as militants, according to the police.

The Human rights Commission took charge of the Mon District killings in Nagaland and is waiting for the SIT probe of the matter.

The commission also requested the government to pay attention to the matter of repealing the AFSPA in Nagaland and other Northeastern states.

Moreover, the Commission directed to pay a sum of Rs. 3lacs to the family members of the deceased, who died under police custody.

The commission in its sitting also directed to pay a sum of Rs. 4.5 lacs to the family members of the deceased in the Mon district killings by the armed forces.  

The Nation Rights Human Commission would wait till the high court declare its verdict on the ‘ Garukhuti Eviction’ case and would take action accordingly.
