    Digital Desk: The Padma Shri laurels went to Bhimavva Doddabalappa Shillekyathara at 96 years old for her distinguished work in preserving Togalu Gombeyaata traditional shadow puppetry regional art from Koppal district in Karnataka. On 25th January  2025 authorities acknowledged her commitment to preserved and promoted traditional puppetry through this distinguished award.

    Through centuries Togalu Gombeyaata has been maintained by Shillekyathara who originates from Moranala village. Shillekyathara's family carries down this art across multiple generations and continues to present both Ramayana and Mahabharata puppet shows. Throughout the last 70 years Shillekyathara achieved mastery of her skill while simultaneously ensuring the future of this tradition through her teachings to young artists.

    Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah honored Shillekyathara's commitment by describing her as worthy of receiving the Padma Shri award. Through his speech the official recognized how she had undertaken various initiatives to exhibit Karnataka's cultural expressions domestically and internationally. Siddaramaiah honored her role as a beacon inspiring upcoming generations because rural arts combined with folk traditions face extinction in current times. He showed immense pride in her accomplishment because her ongoing lifetime work with puppets brought stability to this important cultural practice.

    Shillekyathara's recognition joins a statewide tribute honoring eight individuals who made significant accomplishments in different fields during this year. She stood as a prominent figure in traditional Indian art through her efforts to protect Togalu Gombeyaata which ensures this unique puppet form will inspire future generations.
