'Electoral bonds world's biggest...': Rahul Gandhi hits out at PM Modi, calls him 'champion of corruption'

Gandhi claimed that although there are a few significant concerns in the Lok Sabha elections, such as price hike and unemployment, the BJP is attempting to deflect attention from them.

Digital Desk: Addressing a joint news conference with Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, the former head of the Congress also stated that the opposition INDIA alliance is receiving a lot of support and that the BJP will only be able to secure 150 seats in the Lok Sabha.

"This election is an ideological contest. On the one hand, there is the RSS and the BJP who are trying to end the Constitution and the democratic system of the country, and on the other hand, is the INDIA bloc which is protecting and defending the Constitution and the democratic system, " Gandhi said at the press conference, surrounded by Yadav, Congress general secretaries Jairam Ramesh and Avinash Pande, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai, and other SP leaders.

"This election is a matter of ideology." Gandhi said at the press conference, flanked by Yadav, Congress general secretaries Jairam Ramesh and Avinash Pande, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai, and other SP leaders, "On the one hand, there is the RSS and the BJP who are trying to end the Constitution and the democratic system of the country, and on the other hand, is the INDIA bloc which is protecting and defending the Constitution and the democratic system."

Gandhi claimed that although there are a few significant concerns in the Lok Sabha elections, such as price hike and unemployment, the BJP is attempting to deflect attention from them.

He said, "The PM doesn't always talk about problems; sometimes he is on a seaplane and sometimes he goes underwater in the ocean."

Gandhi claimed that a recent interview with Prime Minister Modi was "scripted" and a "flop show," in which the PM also discussed electoral bonds.

Gandhi questioned why the Supreme Court had discontinued the electoral bonds, given the Prime Minister's claim that they were introduced to promote transparency and purify politics.

He added, "If you wanted to promote transparency, then why were the identities of people who gave the BJP thousands of crores of rupees hidden?" He questioned why the dates on which the businesses donated to the BJP were kept secret.

''It was found that a company got a contract for thousands of crores (of rupees) and after a few days, that company made a donation to the BJP. There was a CBI or ED inquiry on a firm and after 10-15 days, that firm made a donation to the BJP and that inquiry was ended,'' he charged.

The electoral bonds scheme is the ''world's biggest extortion scheme'', the Congress leader said.

Gandhi claimed, "No matter how much clarification the prime minister gives, it will make no difference because the whole country knows that the prime minister is the champion of corruption."

Gandhi said that while he cannot predict the number of seats the Congress-SP alliance would win, he can say with certainty that the partnership will do very well in Uttar Pradesh.
