Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questions need for census and delimitation for the Women's Reservation Bill implementation

Digital Desk: A day after Parliament passed the Women's Reservation Bill, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held a press conference on Friday. While speaking to the media, he supported the bill but also raised questions on its implementation.

Women's reservations are a good thing, but we found two footnotes: the first says that the Census must be completed before to implementation, and the second refers to delimitation. To complete this will take several years. The reality is that 33% reservation can be given to women in Parliament and state Assemblies today itself, it's not a complicated matter," Gandhi added.

Speaking further, the Wayanad MP said that the government has presented this before the country but it will take 10 years for its implementation. "Nobody knows if this will even be implemented. This is a distraction tactic, diversion tactic," he alleged.

The senior Congress leader additionally stated that the central government is trying to divert from the OBC Census through this bill. He asserted that the BJP-led government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not done anything for the welfare of the OBC community. "What are you being distracted from, exactly? From the OBC Census. I mentioned one institution in Parliament that runs the Indian government, namely the Cabinet Secretary and Secretaries....I questioned why just three out of ninety people belong to OBC community?.... I don't understand why PM Modi speaks of OBCs every day but what did he do for them?" Gandhi asked.

Gandhi said, "100% regret hai. This should have been done then. We will get this done," when asked if he regretted that the OBC quota was not included in the bill introduced by the UPA in 2010.

It should be noted that the Parliament on Thursday approved the historic Women's Reservation Bill. The Rajya Sabha voted overwhelmingly in favour of the measure, which would reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women. On Thursday, September 21, all 214 members of the Rajya Sabha voted in favour of the bill, in contrast to the Lok Sabha, where two of the 456 members who were present in the House had opposed it.
