Digital Desk: Indian epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata might soon become part of the history textbooks recommended by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). A high-level panel, led by Professor CI Isaac within the NCERT's Social Science Committee, has proposed sweeping changes to the existing curriculum, aiming to revamp the study of history in schools.
The proposed changes encompass a division of the history syllabus into four distinct periods: classical, medieval, British, and modern India. This restructuring aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the historical timeline. Additionally, the inclusion of national heroes like Subhash Chandra Bose and revered texts such as the Vedas and Ayurveda-related literature has been recommended.
Professor CI Isaac highlighted the significance of these alterations, stating, "The panel has recommended a restructuring of history into four periods. Under the classical period, we suggest the introduction of Indian epics—Ramayana and Mahabharata—for students to grasp the essence and narratives of these epics."
The objective behind this proposal is to offer students insights into the characters and purposes within these epics, fostering a deeper understanding of their cultural significance.
Moreover, the panel has urged for the inscription of the preamble of the Indian Constitution in vernacular languages on classroom walls, aiming to instill national values and principles among students.
Professor Isaac emphasized the importance of familiarizing students with Indian heroes' struggles and victories, emphasizing that this knowledge could bolster their confidence and pride in their heritage.
While these recommendations are part of the final position paper on social sciences, they are pending final approval from the NCERT. Once greenlit, these suggestions will pave the way for the development of new NCERT textbooks, potentially reshaping the educational landscape for Indian students.
